Focus Group Meetings

Focus group meetings are meetings of people recruited among the target audience to gauge the attitude and habits of consumers regarding products and services. In this method, 6-8 people from similar demographic backgrounds come together with a moderator and the subject of research is discussed in this environment.  One of the most important characteristics of these discussions is new and different ideas arising regarding the subject as a result of the interaction of respondents and the group dynamics.

Focus group meetings make it possible to reach rich and varied information in situations where there are time and budget constraints. But they are never recommended as a replacement for quantitative research. Qualitative research supports quantitative research, it doesn’t replace it.

In Depth Discussion

Detailed discussions performed one on one or in pairs with respondents. It isn’t as likely as group discussions to reach new and creative ideas in this technique but it allows access to the maximum amount of information regarding personal subjects. Unlike focus group interviews, since there isn’t any group dynamic and interaction, it isn’t very probable to reach creative and new ideas.

However, in depth discussions are the most productive qualitative research method in the following situations:

  • Gathering information on personal/delicate subjects,

  • Reaching hidden meanings and emotions,

  • Understanding personal opinion by reducing group effects (social approval, approval anxiety),

  • Difficulties such as an inability to gather more than one respondent in the same place due to time constraints.
